FRIENDSHIP IN ACTION

KIDS HELPING KIDS MANAGE STRESS

OUR PROGRAM

The Friendship in Action team helps students facing social, family, and academic pressures to identify their feelings, share their experiences, and develop strong emotional skills that they can use for the rest of their lives.

THE PROBLEM

Young people increasingly face social, family, and academic pressures that affect their lives, sometimes with tragic consequences. These kids struggle because they are afraid to confide in their family or peers, and because educators often receive little training to support their students’ health and well-being. As a result, they feel alone and unheard.

Stressors include:

  • Family problems

  • Racial and gender issues

  • Friendship difficulties

  • Self-identity issues

  • Self-image problems

Signs of stress include:

  • Withdrawal from peers and family

  • Negative behavior in school

  • Eating/not eating

  • Sleeping/not sleeping

  • Self-harm

  • Poor academic performance

THE SOLUTION

Friendship in Action’s unique, youth-led program provides students, age 10-14, with an opportunity to participate in a series of eight weekly sessions with a small group of peers from their school. During the program, the students set group norms, decide on discussion topics, and offer compassionate support to each other, learning and practicing their social and emotional skills along the way.

According to outside evaluators, students who participate in the program report having:

  • a significant reduction in stress levels
  • increased levels of well-being

  • more self-confidence

  • better coping strategies

  • increased understanding of others’ perspectives

  • more empathy for peers

  • more interest in wanting to help others
